A bag is more than its design and materials. Behind every product are people, production steps, materials and places of manufacture.
At manbefair, we therefore aim to provide clear information about where our products are made and what we know about their production.
Our collections are, or have been, produced by different manufacturing partners in India, Pakistan and Italy. Wherever possible, we want the origin of each individual model to be stated directly on the relevant product page.
manbefair has developed over many years. As a result, our range does not come from one single factory and does not follow one single production process.
Depending on the product and collection, there may be differences in:
country and manufacturing partner
leather types and other materials used
tanning and surface treatment
hardware, linings and textile components
construction and workmanship
This is why we do not want to place our entire range under one broad general claim.
What applies to a product should, wherever possible, be stated directly with that product.
We work, or have worked, with selected manufacturers experienced in processing leather, canvas and other materials.
Part of our range is produced in India, while other styles come from Pakistan and Italy.
The businesses differ considerably in size and specialisation, from manufacturers producing larger series to more specialised producers of particular types of leather goods.
For us, important factors include reliable cooperation, product quality, workmanship and the ability to coordinate requirements regarding materials and construction.
At some manufacturing partners, social standards have been assessed through external audits, including assessments within the amfori BSCI framework.
It is important to describe this accurately.
Such an audit relates to a specific production site and a specific point in time. It is not a certification of an individual manbefair product and it is not a general sustainability label.
Documents and audit results may also become outdated over time. For this reason, we do not want to use older assessments to make broad claims about our entire current range.
Where we have specific and reliable information about a product or manufacturing partner, we can communicate it accordingly.
Leather is the defining material in many of our products. Selected styles also use canvas, textile materials or combinations of different materials.
Leather itself can vary considerably.
Depending on the model, differences may include the type of leather, tanning method, thickness, surface and finish. Selected products also use vegetable-tanned leather.
We only use this description where it can actually be attributed to the individual product.
Leather is a natural material. Variations in grain, texture and surface can therefore occur and form part of its individual character. With use, the material can also change and develop a distinctive patina.
Products sold within the European Union are subject to legal requirements, including restrictions concerning certain chemical substances.
We do not regard compliance with such legal requirements as a special sustainability feature. It is a basic requirement for products offered on the market.
For this reason, we do not present legally required compliance as an additional environmental benefit.
Terms such as “sustainable”, “eco-friendly” or “fair” can sound simple, but the reality of a product and its supply chain is much more complex.
This is why manbefair is changing the way we communicate about our products.
Instead of broad claims, we increasingly want to answer:
What kind of product is it?
Which materials are used?
Where was it made?
What specific information do we have about it?
Not every question can be answered in the same level of detail for every older model. We believe that acknowledging this is also part of transparent communication.
For us, transparency does not mean presenting a product as better than it is.
It means making available information as specific as possible and being cautious where reliable evidence is limited.
For a range that has developed over many years, the level of available information can vary. In our current product descriptions, we therefore aim to communicate origin, materials and relevant production details increasingly on a product-specific basis.
In the end, a bag first and foremost needs to work.
That is why design, material, workmanship, function and origin are at the centre of how we present manbefair today.
Whether handbag, backpack, weekender, wallet or accessory, the relevant product page provides the information specific to that individual model.
Fewer broad claims. More specific information.
